jong!thankful
Supernatural churns out some pretty awesome writing. The actual series does have its cheesy moments, but on the whole is not half-bad. There's so much material to work with in this one: 20-plus years' worth of family history, a myriad of monsters and supernatural scenarios for them to work with, and varying reasons for doing what they do.

These are some of the more well-known fics in the fandom, and likely people will have read several if not most of them. More than anything else, this is sort of a commentary on SPN fics I wish there were more of.

First off, some background information and some plot discussion. Beware of plot spoilers.

Plot!fic

The thing about SPN is, it's about ghost stories. I like sinking my teeth into a long, juicy case fic for the boys.

Never Summer by ignipes
A friend calls Sam about a death and possible haunting at a Colorado winter hotel.

Don't Pay the Ferryman by maygra
This is so fantastic in terms of substance. A typical case turns into something much more personal. Maygra makes liberal use of mythology and an original character to explain the tragedy of the boys losing their mother in childhood.

In Reverse by Sodakey
The brothers bump into Sam's college friends, who lead them to their next possible case. A brilliant, brilliant ghost story, 26 chapters and still counting. I can't get enough of this story - I really want to see more of this in the fandom, when Sam's two worlds collide, and especially how his friends view him and his relationship with his brother after having lost contact for so long.

And Fools Shine On by gekizetsu
Another brilliant long!fic. This is the first story in Gekizetsu's The Month of Open Door Series. Something has possessed Dean, with ramifications which Sam has to deal with. The plot actually plays a secondary role; what I love about this fic is that, while it builds on Sam's emotions and abilities, it is a fic about Dean, and an insight into the way he doesn't show the rest of the world who he really is.

And the equally fantastic sequels: If Belief was Enough and Woven

Post-Devil's Trap

Devil's Trap inspired a chockful of fics as the pretty impressive finale for Season One. I enjoy stories here that demonstrate the intensity of feelings in the aftermath, not so much explosively but in quietly fierce ways.

Cat's in the Cradle by ignipes

All but Risen by gekizetsu

Crossroad Dirt by Killa
The brilliant thing about this fic is how Sam comes to understand the reasons why Dean and their father hunt. The author has promised a sequel, and dammit I cannot wait.

AU!fic

Fistful of Rain by marinarusalka
Five lives Dean Winchester didn't live. Sad and creepy and thoughtful by turns.

Gingerbread by sharpest_rose
Monsters in the family. What if the demon had won the first time round?

Beneath by gekizetsu
Spoilers and alternate ending to the episode Skin. A darker portrayal of Dean.

Crossroads by gekizetsu
Spoilers and alternate ending to the episode Scarecrow. Character death. I adore this fic to bits. A dark what-if story.

Third POV!fic

I am such a sucker for these sorts. Experience and knowledge do set the boys apart in various ways from their peers at every stage of life, and I like seeing how these are manifest.

Parental Instincts by dodger_winslow
John Winchester is not the father that Dean's teacher expects him to be.
This story combines two of my favourite tropes in this fandom: 3rd POV and kid!fic. I'm really keen on fics which show what is must be like for someone else looking into the dynamics of the Winchester family. Fandom exploded with stories on Dean and Sam as kids, who know that there are worse things to fear than the bogeyman in the closet. I really want more fics like this.

Brothers and Bar Tabs by geminigrl11
Another 3rd POV!fic. Sam is a little (only a very little) out of character for my liking, but I like the way the original character is portrayed.

The Wild One by apocalypsos Not 3rd POV, but yes! I want more of this! The College!Sam fic that I've enjoyed the most. No matter how hard he tries to be normal, there're some things you learn, you just can't forget.

And random recs:
Things Sam has not missed about this life by cupiscent
Ten things Sam has not missed about this life, and one that he has. Love the insight into both Dean's and Sam's characters which the author manages, in such a short piece.

The Only People for Me are the Mad Ones by ignipes
A future!fic whereby they kill the demon which started their quest in the first place, and what happens with life afterwards.

There are far, far more to add, but I've taken longer than I planned on the entry. So go forth thyself, and enjoy.

Thanks for the recs! Supernatural is up there with Dark Angel as a Guilty Pleasure series for me. It's no Battlestar, but the brothers are so attractive (!!!), and their relationship so interesting, and lots of different story possiblities that I can't help but watch (and read these recs). Thank you for taking the time out! :D

You are very welcome! ^^ Do check out the rest of the stuff by the authors: gekizetsu, maygra, ignipes and trollprincess are pretty prolific, and there's loads more SPN fics to fangirl over. ^^
